FIREFIGHTER INITIAL

 

DURATION: 6 weeksfully residential


DELEGATE GROUP:
This programme is designed for personnel with no previous fire service experience. It concentrates on both the technical and practical training required for the effective deployment of equipment and personnel in order to deal with an aircraft accident/incident utilising the “safe person concept” principles.

PRE ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS:  Personnel should be medically fit in accordance with the standards set by ODPM (relevant national UK standard for non UK students).

 this programme may also be offered to any persons having:

  • a current Certificate of Competence as a Firefighter or Supervisor (Low Category Aerodrome) or one which has expired within the preceding six months
  • a current Certificate of Competence as an Airport Firefighter, or
  • a current Record of Competence equivalent to that of a Local Fire Authority role mapped Firefighter
  • the equivalent MOD standard to that of the role of Firefighter
  • a National Vocational Qualification Level 2 Firefighter, Level 3 Operations or its equivalent.
     

AIM: To provide technical and practical training in order to comply with the requirements of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAP 168 – Certificates of Competency) and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Document Annex 14 and document 9137-AN/898 Airport Services Manual Part 1, Rescue and Fire fighting

The structured learning programme will be formally assessed through written, oral and practical assessments. On successful completion of the programme the individual will be issued with an appropriate certificate of competence and will possess the level of knowledge, understanding and skills as provided by a structured learning programme. The period of validity of the certificate of competence will be 4 years

OBJECTIVES: At the end of this programme the student will be able to:

  • state the principles of dynamic risk assessment process
  • define the term “Safe Person Concept”
  • state the requirements for developing team member skills to become an effective member of the RFFS.
  • demonstrate competence with basic Fire Service and ancillary equipment involving Hoses, Branches, Ladders and Foam equipment.
  • state the test/inspection requirements for Fire Service equipment.
  • demonstrate competence in knots, words of command and hand signals used in the Airport Fire Service.
  • describe the behaviour of water and demonstrate the ability to use fireground formulas.
  • state the primary and secondary media used for firefighting together with the hazards and difficulties of each.
  • demonstrate competence in the elementary operation of Fire Service pumps and the priming mechanisms
  • describe the various materials used in aircraft construction and how they will react in a fire situation including fuel and fuel tanks.
  • state the appropriate tactics and techniques used when dealing with aircraft accidents/incidents
  • describe the requirements for the safe operation of rescue equipment and the potential hazards for crews and casualties.
  • describe the requirements for preserving the scene at an aircraft accident/incident.
  • recognise terms used in radio telephone transmissions and apply them in practical situations
  • define the basic fire safety requirements affecting UK airports.
  • define airside safety principles
  • state the mobilising and alerting principles at station level
  • state the principles of zoning and the requirements for aerodrome rendezvous points
  • state and demonstrate the procedures required for the safe operation of breathing apparatus
  • demonstrate competence in the handling of Fire Service equipment in ‘live’ fire scenarios
  • demonstrate competence when applying the appropriate tactics and techniques used when dealing with simulated aircraft accident/incidents.
