SUPERVISOR CREW COMMANDER INITIAL

DURATION: 2½ weeks fully residential

TRAINEE GROUP: Thisprogramme is designed for personnel with previous Fire Service experience and provides comprehensive instruction covering the role of Crew Commander including: 

  • managing the safety of others
  • operational tactics and techniques
  • effective deployment of equipment and personnel
  • the ability to take command and control of a vehicle or sector.

PRE ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS: Personnel nominated shall be medically fit in accordance with the standards set by ODPM (relevant national standard for non UK students) and should have satisfied their employer that they are capable of absorbing the technical and practical aspects of this programme.

They should also be in possession of a current Certificate of Competence in the role of Firefighter and have at least two years’ operational experience.

AIM: To provide technical and practical training for personnel who are capable of undertaking the first stage of Fire Service Management and whose role on return to station will include that of training crews in the skills of firefighting and rescue techniques at both a technical and practical level and to assist the Watch Officer in command and control at an aircraft incident.

The programme is designed for personnel who have already successfully completed a Firefighter initial course and have consolidated that knowledge with further workplace application at an airport and have demonstrated the potential of leadership qualities.

The structured learning programme will be formally assessed through written, oral and practical assessments. On successful completion of the programme the individual will be issued with an appropriate certificate of competence in acquisition and will possess the appropriate level of technical and practical competency in acquisition which will allow them, with some supervision, to:

    a) be the Crew Commander of an airport fire appliance
    b) plan and conduct a training programme, within health and safety guidelines, to cover the basic skill requirements for Firefighters at a licensed airport.
    c) apply command and control procedures at an aircraft incident.

The period of validity of the certificate of competence will be 4 years

OBJECTIVES:  At the end of thisprogramme the student will be able to:

  • identify the training needs as defined in CAP 699
  • define the requirements for the need for teamwork and leadership
  • state the legislative requirements for licensed aerodromes as detailed in CAP 168, The Air Navigation Order and other Licence conditions
  • state the requirements for submitting plans for future resource needs
  • define the role and responsibility of the Crew Commander (Incident Command System)
  • identify the need for managing the safety of others
  • apply communications procedures applicable to the role of Crew Commander at aircraft accidents/incidents
  • state the requirements for the implementation of breathing apparatus control procedures and subsequent actions
  • identify the need for Post Accident investigation
  • state the actions of a Crew Commander at aircraft accidents/incidents and the appropriate tactics and techniques
  • demonstrate the competence in the command and control of a vehicle or sector at simulated aircraft accidents/incidents
  • state the principles involved in the management and planning of training sessions
  • identify the classifications of dangerous goods
  • discuss the appropriate tactics and techniques at aircraft accidents/incidents through syndicate exercises
  • apply decision making principles in command and control situations using computer simulation
  • discuss the principles of emergency decontamination
